|yron Redding is basically a smart-alec who would have been most at home in the Spike Jones Bands of the 30s-50s. Has played brass instruments since Joshua had him march around the walls of Jericho or since 1945; whichever came first. Jack of almost all valved brass instruments and master of none, his un-achieved attempts at stardom have included the French Horn, the Baritone Horn, and the Double Belled Euphonium (A strange looking instrument which ceased to be manufactured before any of you reading this were born).
Byron joined the Musician's Union in 1948. He played Solo Cornet in the University of Kansas Concert Band and Orchestra and played both trumpet and euphonium on tour.
He played both solo cornet and French Horn in the United States Marine Corps 1st Division Concert and Stage Bands, performing extensively in all states west of the Mississippi and in both Canada and Mexico. Performed multiple times in the Rose Bowl Parade, at the Hollywood Bowl, Marineland of the Pacific and at Disneyland in addition to State Fairs and Rodeos throughout the Western United States. Never saw a cowboy he thought he couldn't whip and was most frequently wrong.
In addition to playing in The Overtones, Byron also plays in the Argentine High School Reunion Band (all players must have graduated from the school more than 50 years ago); and the Johnson County, Kansas, New Horizons Band.
With all this playing you would think he would sound really good, but you would be wrong. He is just glad to still have his own teeth and to be able to hit any notes at all, especially if they are occasionally the right note.
